A mobile detailer asked us: “I don’t have a shop. Can I even have a Google Business Profile?”

Yes. Google specifically supports service-area businesses — companies that travel to customers instead of having customers come to them. Plumbers, electricians, cleaners, mobile detailers, landscapers, and dozens of other trades all qualify.

Service-Area Business vs. Storefront

When you set up a GBP as a service-area business, Google hides your physical address from customers. Instead of showing a pin on the map, it shows the areas you serve.

You still appear in local search results, the local pack, and Google Maps searches. You just appear based on service area rather than physical proximity.

According to Google’s own guidelines, service-area businesses are fully eligible for Google Business Profile and all its features — including reviews, posts, photos, and the local pack.

How to Set Up Your Service-Area GBP

  1. Go to business.google.com and create or claim your listing
  2. When asked for your address, check “I deliver goods and services to my customers”
  3. Enter your home or office address (Google uses this for verification but hides it)
  4. Set your service area by city, county, or radius (up to 20 areas)
  5. Complete all other sections: description, services, hours, photos

Google will verify your listing via postcard, phone, or video call. Verification takes 3-7 days.

Common Mistakes Service-Area Businesses Make

Using a PO Box or virtual office. Google prohibits these and will suspend your listing if caught. Use your real home or office address — it won’t be shown publicly.

Setting too large a service area. If you serve a 15-mile radius but claim a 50-mile radius, Google dilutes your ranking across a larger area. Be honest about where you actually work.

Not listing specific services. Google’s service list helps match you with specific searches. “Emergency plumbing” and “water heater installation” are separate services — list them all.

Why It Matters for Your Revenue

Without a GBP, you’re invisible for “near me” searches — which account for 46% of all Google searches according to GoGulf. You’re also invisible in Google Maps, which 86% of people use to find local businesses.

A complete service-area GBP with 30+ reviews puts you in front of customers actively looking for what you do, in the area you serve, right when they need it. No ad spend required.

Start by claiming your profile. Then focus on reviews and photos. Within 90 days, Google should be generating calls for you.
